Art Museum Museum
Take some time to discover local and foreign painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, photographers, and creative videographers at Istanbul Modern Museum. As Turkey's first modern art museum, its permanent collection strongly features contemporary art by Turkish painters. Art by non-Turkish painters and videographers is also displayed but is not as prominent. The museum has several temporary exhibits and hosts international art events throughout the year. Check the website for updated information on current exhibits and events. Put Istanbul Modern Museum at the forefront of your travel plans using our Istanbul holiday planner.

  • Most of the art and installations seem very unimaginative. There are a few 20th century historical photographs covering conflicts / world events though. Security are very interested in making you wear your backpack on the front (?!), and don't mind a bit about dozens of primary school children making enough noise to stop you being able to think about what you are trying to view. Not recommended at all. Cafe has a nice view.
  • Great museum, except surrounding construction makes it difficult to access currently. Lovely Bosphorus view in its Cafe/restaurant.
  • Got bad experience in the cinema salon. There was a guy (visitor) attacks me without certain reason, but the security and the staff doesnt do anything, only listen to our complain
  • Very beautiful art house of Istanbul. They also have a free day and free movie days. Before that, you can visit the library or just watch the view from the restaurant-cafe they have on the top floor.
  • Best for turkish modern visual arts, cafe is a must to enjoy a coffe or a glass of wine to see old Istanbul from a distance.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
