Istanbul Modern Museum, Istanbul

#6 of 94 in Museums in Istanbul
Take some time to discover local and foreign painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, photographers, and creative videographers at Istanbul Modern Museum. As Turkey's first modern art museum, its permanent collection strongly features contemporary art by Turkish painters. Art by non-Turkish painters and videographers is also displayed but is not as prominent. The museum has several temporary exhibits and hosts international art events throughout the year. Check the website for updated information on current exhibits and events. Plan a trip to Istanbul easily and quickly by telling Inspirock to suggest an itinerary.

  • They mowed for time being with small collection and a bit pricey. The museum card do not give you access. Ticket is 51 lire pro persona. Nice small collection. Maybe a bit overkill with all the guards...  more »

  • Wanna spend few hours in a cool and interesting place while hiding from hot Istanbul sun? Thats your choice! Modern art can be controversial, but thats why we love it. Nice staff, and different halls representing different kinds of modern art. Decent gift store as for modern art museum.
  • This museum or maybe rather a center, shows a good variety of the art with a modern agenda. I was really surprised by the Turkish artists, except from the international ones. I would definitely recommend a visit for the artlovers out there. This place is also very close to good food and drinks afterwards.
  • This is one of the best museums in Istanbul. It is located in a really nice spot with a view of the sea. It has two floors. One is filled mostly with the permanent collection which includes a good variety of local artists. The other floor holds temporary exhibitions which vary in type and content. It is big enough the spend a few hours on a visit but not too big that you get lost and can’t see all of the artwork. There is a nice restaurant inside the museum as well. Also the museum shop usually has really cool design items. Definitely recommend visiting this museum if you’ve never been.
  • Definitely one of the best museums to visit in Istanbul. Perfect location just few steps away from Tophane metro station. However, the noisy construction works outside (August 2016) do not give the impression a hidden gem is lying behind. The permanent collection is interesting, diverse and well-selected and the contemporary exhibitions are really great. The stories the artworks tell about Turkey and the Turks are unbeatable, at least for Middle-Easterner like me. The ongoing exhibitions during my visit in August 2016 were: Artists in Their Time, Masters of Cinema in Turkey: Lütfi Akad, İnci Eviner Retrospective: Who's Inside You?, and my favourite: People Attract People. A display of the works of 80 photographers from Turkey about Turkey, shot over a period of 80 years, People Attract People was touching and really amazing. Quick facts: - The admission fees are 25 TL. - The employees at the reception are welcoming and they speak English. - The museum contains a cinema, a library and a store. - You can borrow sitting stools from the cloakroom on the upper floor to paint at the museum. - You can fill a review form about the museum and the exhibitions at the front desk on your way out. I give Istanbul Museum of Modern Art a rating of 8/10 till the construction works outside are done and a small garden, water fountain, and some big trees are added to the outdoor space. Update (June 2018): the museum moved to this new location. The 2 bottom quick facts above didn't seem to be still valid. I modified the rating to 5/5. Well-deserved.
  • Wonderful pieces of inspiring and intimidating art. Variety of paintings and sculptures. Has a nice souvenir shop and a cafe with a beautiful view.
