Take some time to discover local and foreign painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, photographers, and creative videographers at Istanbul Modern Museum. As Turkey's first modern art museum, its permanent collection strongly features contemporary art by Turkish painters. Art by non-Turkish painters and videographers is also displayed but is not as prominent. The museum has several temporary exhibits and hosts international art events throughout the year. • Not very visible from the street, there is a big building site just in front. The way in is not very pedestrian friendly at this moment (may2016). The building is quite spacy, luminous and modern. Lots of guardians in every room which is not particularly pleasant. The exhibition itself was quite nice, I enjoyed the video installations a lot, and also the fact that was some woman issues put on the table. It took me under two hours to have a look at everything, including some pauses. And the entry fee was 25tl. The restaurant inside (2nd floor) was pricy and a bit sterile, so I decided not to stay. There is a library and a cinema in the 1floor. I think this place needs some more Istanbul spirit, some big trees to give shade, flowers, plants and a big park around it would complete the picture.
  • Great museum for modern art lovers. It has admirable temporary and permanent exhibitions and a movie theatre. there is free entrance on Thursdays (only for residents of Turkey though).
  • Very cool contemporary art museum with sweeping views of the Bosphorous. Lots of really interesting art by Turkish artists, focused on issues of Muslim/Turkish identity, the intersection of tradition and modernity, women's issues and more. Definitely worth visiting if you want to take a break from trekking around the hilly city to enjoy some art.
  • Great place with moving art! Unfortunately it costs more for foreigners than for Turkish citizens, and they're not good at letting you know. We were halfway through the tour (on a free day) when we were escorted out, presumably because we were speaking English. Pretty disappointing. Make sure you pay if you're from out of town.
  • World class modern art museum based in an awesome warehouse conversion along with a library and restaurant. Mixes Turkish and internationally renowned artists. Most pieces are fun an interactive. Based near the tram and trendy Karaköy neighbourhood which is home to dozens of hipster bars, restaurants and shops. Unmissable and great contrast to the various religious and historical attractions in the Capital.
