Istanbul Modern Museum, Istanbul
(4.4/5 based on 1,500 reviews on the web)
Take some time to discover local and foreign painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, photographers, and creative videographers at Istanbul Modern Museum. As Turkey's first modern art museum, its permanent collection strongly features contemporary art by Turkish painters. Art by non-Turkish painters and videographers is also displayed but is not as prominent. The museum has several temporary exhibits and hosts international art events throughout the year. Check the website for updated information on current exhibits and events. Put Istanbul Modern Museum at the forefront of your travel plans using our Istanbul holiday planner.

  • we went on a rainy day and were amazed by the wonderful art on display. It was also quite fun to watch the ship traffic on the Bosphorus and have a snack at the restaurant next door. Wonderful venue!!...  more »

  • This museum has a very peculiar and exotic característa. This set in an old warehouse on the edge of the Strait of Bóforo. Actually, contrasts with the very old. If you are in Istanbul to use the term "IstambulModerneMuseum! and everyone will indicate. Inside saw masterpieces, and I know many, many museums around the world; I have a passion for the arts. Worth checking out.

  • Wonderful modern paintings and sculptures. The view over the Marmaray see and Haya Sophia and Topkapı Palace is outstanding.
  • Worth visiting with cool collection of local artists work & temporary exhibition. Aside from that overlooking a breathtaking side of the Bosporus & short stroll from the vibrant Karaköy and its many cozy cafes & street art
  • Definitely one of the best museums to visit in Istanbul. Perfect location just few steps away from Tophane metro station. However, the noisy construction works outside (August 2016) do not give the impression a hidden gem is lying behind. The permanent collection is interesting, diverse and well-selected and the contemporary exhibitions are really great. The stories the artworks tell about Turkey and the Turks are unbeatable, at least for Middle-Easterner like me. The ongoing exhibitions during my visit in August 2016 were: Artists in Their Time, Masters of Cinema in Turkey: Lütfi Akad, İnci Eviner Retrospective: Who's Inside You?, and my favourite: People Attract People. A display of the works of 80 photographers from Turkey about Turkey, shot over a period of 80 years, People Attract People was touching and really amazing. Quick facts: - The admission fees are 25 TL. - The employees at the reception are welcoming and they speak English. - The museum contains a cinema, a library and a store. - You can borrow sitting stools from the cloakroom on the upper floor to paint at the museum. - You can fill a review form about the museum and the exhibitions at the front desk on your way out. I give Istanbul Museum of Modern Art a rating of 8/10 till the construction works outside are done and a small garden, water fountain, and some big trees are added to the outdoor space.
  • Loved it, must visit for any art/design geek. Most of the collection is fresh local artists.
  • Museum itself was fine, maybe 4/5, but I'm absolutely in love with the museum cafe/restaurant with beautiful views over the Bosphorus/Golden Horn.
