Forum Of Theodisius, Istanbul

2.8
The Forum of Theodosius (Greek: φόρος Θεοδοσίου, today Beyazıt Square) was an area in Constantinople. It was originally built by Constantine I and named the Forum Tauri ("Forum of the Bull"). In 393, however, it was renamed after Emperor Theodosius I, who rebuilt it after the model of Trajan's Forum in Rome, surrounded by civic buildings such as churches and baths and decorated with a triumphal column at its center.

  • The Forum of Theodosus is the name of the Roman period of the area where the present Beyazit square is. Until the 4th century, the area called Forum Tauri (Bull Square) was later named after this name. In this period there was a Jupiter temple in the northeast of the area, surrounded by marble-structured civilian and public buildings, including large columns of churches and baths. Theodosius column In the middle of the forum, there was a pillar planted in honor of Emperor Theodosius. At the top of the statue of I. Theodosius was decorated with the relief depictions of the Empire's battles against the Barbarians. Thanks to a spiral staircase inside, visitors could climb to the top of the column. Their lives are known to be at the top of the pillar until the middle Byzantine period, called Stylite praying and worship at the top of such pillars. Column 15. remained until the end of the century, and a number of parts were reserved for use in the Patrona Halil bath.
