When I arrived (in a totally appropriate time and after some difficulty in finding her) was closed and no one has been able to give me information on opening hours and days. I could appreciate only the outside and, then, the traditionalist district where it is located. It would be really very useful, if any traveller talking was aware, that I might know the schedules and other details that may help you not make a wasted trip.

Japan, together with our guests from wandering a little out-of-the-way location in Fatih side though we found one more Shitty Fethiye and briefly visited. Still a great achievement to see even the surviving frescoes.

Usually these two attractions, Brown (choir) and Fethiye visit in one day. So, first visit this small charming Temple. Admire the Byzantine walls, explore stands at the entrance (not very much), and then view the mosaics. Get with the Eminonu on the 90-m bus stop is Fethiye. On Museum map entry for free.

  • This is now called the Fethiye Museum and there is a small fee (or Museum Card) to enter. There are some lovely painted ceilings depicting saints and important Christians and these are remarkably well preserved (or restored). You have access to part of the building, the remainder has been converted to a mosque which is unspectacular inside. Very pretty fascade outside with the red roses improving the appearance.
  • Very interesting mosque/church. When you step in feels like your stepping back into history and can help feeling eary. Worth a visit.
  • I went in 2000 and the caretaker carefully and kindly lifted the cardboard protecting the 1600 year old floor mosaics. The church was in astonishingly horrible repair with rain falling inside, pigeons and utterly desperate conditions. In 2012, I returned and the place crowded with tourists enjoying the superbly restored building. The neighborhood is very dicey in that it is conservatively Muslim. Take care not to be too resort-eye in attire. You won't have problems but will be stared at if wearing shorts and a tank top. Highly recommended.
  • What is taken unfairly, should be turned back! Turkey should turn back Constandinople to christians people.
  • Back side of mosque is a small museum with some Byzantine mosaics. A nice walk from Kariye Museum, takes 12 minutes. And from here you can continue 12 minutes more (a downhill walk) to Orthodox Patriarchate.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
