  • Smaller, lesser known Kariye is an alternative much preferred if you don't have time to visit all but don't want to miss a Byzantine Church in Byzantium! It's a museum you pay less than two euros but comes up with a vivid memory.

  • This small church is off-the-beaten track, probably due to its dimunitive size. Unless you are some sort of Byzantine art expert, it is hard to imagine you spending more than about twenty minutes here...  more »
  • This mosque is open every day of the week is currently a museum 5.-TL can tour both. If you have, you can use the Museum. If you can find a little out-of-the-way place, though not necessarily say we navigate. Some of the frescoes in good condition, well worth a visit.

  • I went in 2000 and the caretaker carefully and kindly lifted the cardboard protecting the 1600 year old floor mosaics. The church was in astonishingly horrible repair with rain falling inside, pigeons and utterly desperate conditions. In 2012, I returned and the place crowded with tourists enjoying the superbly restored building. The neighborhood is very dicey in that it is conservatively Muslim. Take care not to be too resort-eye in attire. You won't have problems but will be stared at if wearing shorts and a tank top. Highly recommended.
  • Back side of mosque is a small museum with some Byzantine mosaics. A nice walk from Kariye Museum, takes 12 minutes. And from here you can continue 12 minutes more (a downhill walk) to Orthodox Patriarchate.
  • Holy place
