The Atik Valide Mosque is an Ottoman mosque located on the hill above a large and densely populated district of Üsküdar, in Istanbul, Turkey.HistoryThe Atik Valide Mosque was one of the most extensive mosque complexes in Istanbul area. The mosque was built for Nurbanu Sultan, the Venetian-born wife of Selim II and the mother of Murad III. She was the first valide sultan that exercised effective rule over the Ottoman Empire from the harem during the period known as the Sultanate of Women. The famed imperial architect Mimar Sinan completed the mosque in 1583, and it was his last major work. • Hidden gem. Usually less tourist so you can get amazing pictures and peaceful mosque
  • While the architecture of the Mosque is quite brilliant and the various sets of gates and stairs connecting the different parts of the complex are very attractive my favorite part is just how normal this place feels. While it has been maintained it doesn't carry any of that extra polish given to touristic mosques and instead feels just like an unusually grand neighborhood Mosque.
  • Really a great, beautiful, majestic, hundreds of years of historic masjid from the Great Ottoman Empire era, hidden behind the main streets of Üsküdar. It is in service for muslims since 1586. A must see hundreds of years old, well taken care of, great islamic architecture inside and out. Since it'a not on any major roads, you need to walk about 5mins from the bus stop on the main street. • Ancient history of Istanbul is always interesting.
  • I visited a couple of years ago and liked it then, but I noticed this time that the lighting has been improved and it is really gorgeous. Well done to the restoration crew. Lovely patterns and use of colour inside. The courtyard is need and the plane trees are magnificent at the moment. Visit it - you won’t be disappointed. Head up the road to the Çinili Camii too.
