Dogancay Museum, Istanbul

4.5
#24 of 101 in Museums in Istanbul
Housed in a historic five-story home more than 150 years old, you'll find Dogancay Museum, Turkey's first modern art museum. Since opening its doors in 2004, the museum has predominantly showcased the work of its namesake, Burhan Doğançay, and his father Adil. The museum also hosts an annual art competition for elementary school children to promote art education. Doğançay's obsession with the concept of urban walls echoes throughout the museum through colorful abstract paintings accompanied by some photographs. His father's work consists of impressionistic scapes done with oil on canvas. Knowledgeable guides take visitors through the museum's floors and lend insight to the displayed work. • Such a great painter, the museum is doing a terrible job at promoting it - the entrance is hidden, nobody knows where it is, no visitors. The paintings are beautiful and are a rare example of a contemporary artist that reveals skill and a sharp eye for exquisite visuals.
  • The staff here insults women. Beware of ignorant and rude staff. If you don’t want to have a spoiled experience, I suggest you skip this very small place.
  • Disrespectful...! Closed in official opening hours and not answering the phone
