Church of St. Mary of the Mongols, Istanbul

Saint Mary of the Mongols LocationThe church, which usually is not open to the public and lies behind a high wall, is placed in the district of Fatih, in the neighborhood of Fener. It lies on Tevkii Cafer Mektebi Sokak, at the summit of a slope overlooking the Golden Horn, and near to the imposing building of the Phanar Greek Orthodox College.HistoryAt the beginning of the 7th century, Princess Sopatra, and her friend Eustolia built a nunnery on the slope of the fifth hill of Constantinople. The ground, which was bestowed by the Emperor, lay north of the Cistern of Aspar and had been used up to then as a cemetery. The building was dedicated to Saint Eustolia. During the 11th century, a monastery was added. It was dedicated to All Saints, and had a close relationship with the monastery of the Great Lavra, on mount Athos. During the Latin domination after the Fourth Crusade, the monastery disappeared. In 1261, after the reconquest of the city by the Byzantines, Isaac Doukas, father-in-law of George Acropolites and maternal uncle of Michael VIII Palaiologos, rebuilt a simple, one-storey monastery, dedicated to the Theotokos Panaghiotissa. In 1266, the building was enlarged, and a painter, named Modestos, decorated it.

  • Small modest simple and nice. The oldest church of Istanbul still in use from the byzantinw era. Widths visiting
  • Historic church in the atmospheric Balat neighborhood. If the gate is shut ring the buzzer and an attendant might be inside. I was lucky and was allowed to tour. Discover the only Byzantine Church never changed in Istanbul, including a posted letter from the Sultan protecting this building. Leave a little money to the church for maintenance and such. This is living history!
  • We got to see this historic church and the letter of the sultan that is still hung inside. No pictures inside the church is allowed though.
  • This small church is one of the oldest in Istanbul and dates back to byzantine era. It is the only church that has never been converted to a mosque. It is a very small church with a bell in its courtyard. Its located just near the big and tall red bricked building which is a school but often mistaken by church. The interior is nice and there is some old work of art. However the staff are aggressive and not welcoming at all, they do not speak english and do not answer any question and any info. It is difficult to get there and neighborhood is not pleasant at all.
  • Amazing architecture...but it remains mostly closed...plz check before going there.
