Beyoglu, Istanbul

4.1
#4 of 19 in Neighborhoods in Istanbul
At Beyoglu Europe and Asia are closer than anywhere else in the city. Located on the Golden Horn bay, on the European side of the city, the neighborhood has a long history of multiculturalism, as is clearly visible in its various architectural styles. From the Genoese and Venetian merchants of the Middle Ages to the European diplomats and artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to local Jews and Greeks, many different communities have left their mark on the area. Catch a ride on a historical tram or browse a selection of shops. While here, you can also visit the city's largest synagogue and Catholic cathedral, and see numerous museums, art galleries, and theaters. Bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and cafes range from traditionally Turkish to distinctly European here. Beyoglu is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Istanbul Edition.

  • this street is full with restaurant and bars and street performers. it is a nice walk starting from galata tower up to Taksim square  more »
  • I really love the Beyoglu area. Taksim Square, the lively pedestrian and his amazing confectionaries with Turkish delight. An area with many youth, with nightlife. Don't forget to meet her.

  • One of the important and populous district of Istanbul. Unfortunately, nowadays, Arab istia, labels and signs in Arabic, itinerant vendors, street performers, beggars Arab. Concrete jungle İstiklâl Caddesi trip, we saw the tram as symbolic. The historic Çiçek Pasajı, empty, waiting for customers. Historic churches and Galatasaray high school, Pearl Bakery with stores located in Beyoğlu, unfortunately, very neglected.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
