  • Basilica Cistern every day 09.00 – 17.30 p.m. open to the public. Emperor Justinian in 532 by underground Cistern built under Stoa Basilica, also known as the Basilica Cistern for his involvement. Cisterns, length 140 m width 70 m rectangular covering an area of is a giant structure. a stone staircase in this level reached 52-digit each cistern 9 m. high 336 columns. 4.80 meters each other at intervals of 28 of them in the order of those columns, each standing 12 row. Rising in the water, these columns are an immense forest and remind the visitor as soon as you enter the cistern. The weight of the cross vaults in the form of round cistern ceiling, arches were transferred through the columns, mostly older buildings gathered in a variety of marble, carved from granite and a large portion of the column had only one, some of it consists of two parts. This column is different from place to place the titles of property. Of these, 98 of which reflects a section while reflecting Dor at Corinth style. Cistern built of bricks, 4.80 m thick walls and brick-paved floor Hall with a thick layer of mortar plastered water cannot pass. That's a total of 9,800 m2 area, capable of storing approximately 100,000 tons of water cisterns.

  • You enter this cistern from the street behind the pink government building, so location on map is generally correct, just not the entrance. On Friday morning, enjoying the solitude on one of the table with chairs and 0 visitors and all shops draped over. Recommended!
  • Wrongly pinned in Google Maps, attempted to rectify but failed!! You have to admire the builders and restorers of these places and then on the other hand wonder at why it would fall into disrepair and disuse when it is in the heartland of tourists. I was initially excited when I looked at the pictures, but then I wondered why all the comments were poor. Had to see it for myself. I was the only tourist. Almost had to wake up the man in the "ticket" booth. The place smelled very damp and musty as you probably would expect from a former water cistern. Awesome columns but poorly lit up only a portion of them - cost cutting one would suspect with lighting and heating.
  • Adress is complety wrong. This Cistern is in Sultanahmet near from the Yerebatan Sarnıcı also in Sultanahmet
  • Unfortunately not allowed to take photos inside. This is a historic place, similar to an underground palace. It is basically an open area. I found it interesting even if there was not so much to see.
  • Comparing to the Basilica Cistern right near, this place doesn't really have anything. I felt like 10 TL entrance fee has been effectively robbed. I think most of the good review here are mistakenly for Basilica Cistern. Good thing is it'll take only 5 mins to look around inside.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
