Arykanda or Arycanda is an Ancient Lycian city, former bishopric and present Catholic titular see in Antalya Province in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Arykanda was built upon five large terraces ascending a mountain slope, located near the small village of Aykiriçay, presently on the Elmalı-Finike road.HistoryArycanda is known to be one of the old Lycian cities, as its name ends with -anda, indicative of its Anatolian origin; dating back as far as the 2nd millennium BC. On the other hand, the oldest remains and finds from the city date from the 6th or 5th century BCE. The site is being excavated and restored by an Ankara University team headed by Prof. Dr. Cevdet Bayburtluoglu since 1971.Gods and goddesses known to have been worshipped here are: (mostly Greek) AphroditeApolloAresArtemisAsklepiosAthenaHeliosHeraHeraclesHermesHygeiaKakasbos (an Anatolian horseman-deity)Mithras (Persian)NemesisSomendeus (a mountain god)Tyche Arycanda survived through Byzantine times, until the 6th century when the settlement moved to a new site south of the modern road, which is called Arif (or Aruf) Settlement in archaeological literature so that it will not mix up with the older site.

  • Absolutely fell in love with these ancient Greek ruins in the middle of a Turkish mountain! - Well worth the visit, it costs 5 Turkish lire (very little) per person and you can walk around practically to yourself (very few tourists there). - The place is huge, I'd recommend to stay for 2-3 hours to get a proper viewing of the most important architecture and ruins. - Includes an awesome amphi theatre and a breathtaking view over the mountains. Impressive to see how big scale they used to build back in the days (back in the days being the 2nd-4th Century and later based on what I read on the info graphics on the site). - The place itself has been home to architects since the 70's and till this day they are still digging out and preserving this wonderful piece of history. The archeologists there are very helpful and informative like Turkish people in a nutshell. Always willing to help. Well worth the trip!

  • Within the limits of the village of Finike Antalya province Arif to the Apple way to steep hillside a Lycian city. In the Lycian language Ary-ka-wanda means next to high cliff. I think this is the best preserved of the region little theatre. In addition, a regional market and resting place at the entrance to the road.
