Troy (Truva), Canakkale
Categories: Architectural Buildings, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Gaze across the plains of Troy (Truva), where Odysseus once left the proverbial wooden horse in one of the most cunning war hoaxes in history. This World Heritage Site was the center of ancient civilizations from the early Bronze Age until Roman times. Driven by his childhood obsession with Homer's epic, German businessman Heinrich Schliemann excavated the remains of nine historical civilizations in the 1870s. Walk along the remnants of rough ancient walls and across a paved chariot ramp. With your imagination and the help of a guide you can picture how the famed city from The Iliad appeared. The layer of Roman Ilium is best-preserved with its bouleuterion (the city council) and a small theater. Kids will enjoy examining the mock Trojan horse in front of the entrance. We had a great morning here. When we arrived, it was quiet and we were the first people around the ruins. We enjoyed the views and the history. The car park is large and free. The shop and cafe was good.
It's literally only ruins, but who cannot love the notion of wandering around the famous Troy. It was a great feeling to be there. Will treasure the moment forever.
If you don't have much knowledge it may come across as just seeing a bunch of old walls, but if you use your imagination it becomes a magical place. My favourite location in Turkey.
Fun to visit, especially as I enjoyed the idea of the Trojan horse. Interesting to see the ruins, and walk the area where it all occurred. 5 TL for parking 20TL per person to enter
Very old ruins so it they are not well preserved, wich can be a form of deception. But its a must for every history fan. Plus, lot ruins have been destroy by the lack of precaution of the archeologist. If you don't have a lot of time to spend in turkey, pass your way because there are over 10 better ruins site in this country.
