Trip Planner: Europe / Turkey / Turkish Aegean Coast / Mugla Province / Bodrum / Bodrum City / Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
Admire Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the only standing historic site of the original Seven Wonders of Antiquity. Built in the 4th century BCE, this 1,500-year-old mausoleum is known for the novelty of its architectural style compared to other buildings of its time. Although many of the artifacts from the mauseoleum are on display in museums around the world, the ruins here include column pieces that display ancient Greek stone-carving work, an ancient stairway, and parts of mosaics. View some of these artifacts and mosaics at the museum adjacent to the ruins and learn about the history behind them. Wear comfortable shoes so you can get around easily. Note that the site is readily accessible from the city center and local metro station. Mausoleum of Halicarnassus Reviews
Hidden behind narrow alleys of old town Bodrum, this is probably the most unique - if unassuming - attraction in Bodrum, with a huge claim to fame: one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. That.... more »
Ssdly most of the best items from this attraction are in the British Museum. The Turkish people are still trying to get them back, holding public petitions regularly. But it is still worth a visit... more »
Expected this to be quite small, but quite a large place, informative area along with gardens, mosaic, tombs. There's toilets inside and parking at a little council place about 100m away more »
It was as openly reported, a few pieces of the mausoleum dotted around. But it was serene and atmospheric and certainly worth a quick visit. (Only 14 lira entry so not expensive and hopefully goes a little towards keeping the site open to the public).
It's one of the seven wonders of the world and if you ever come by, you should definitely spare half an hour or so to take a look around. Most of the building has been destroyed during an earthquake and the rest of the blocks were used to build the Bodrum castle but with the help of the map and a visual model (inside the museum part which is tiny but if you have time to read the stories they are very insightful) you can imagine the glorious building there was. I gave 3 stars because there was some rubbish in the grounds and there wasn't any coffee place or such inside so you can spend time there and take it all in. Still, it is a beautiful sight and cultural experience so I would recommend to see it at least once.
Grandpa's Garage Studio 7 suggests to get over here and get healthy. So much history, we are able to see all the detail to craftmenship everywhere. See what you can find to be true and pass it on.
Just happened to walk past this, not knowing there to be one of the seven wonders of the world nearby while on holiday. It was close and could only look from afar. There didn't look to be much left to look at. Interesting none the less.
There really isn't much left of the ancient wonder of the world. It fell down centuries ago, then the knights hospitalier took a heap of the stone away to build the castle in Bodrum, then when the site was rediscovered, the British took the good marbles back to London. So what you have left are some foundations, with the odd bit of column and marble scattered around the place. There's a video to watch, a model, and some drawings, based on the writings of Pliny and what's been discovered on site. It's definitely worth a visit and the 14 TL entry fee if you're in Bodrum, if only for the chance to use your imagination.
