Grosse Moschee von Sousse, Sousse

#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in Sousse Governorate
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Marking the entrance to the medina, Grosse Moschee von Sousse is one of the biggest and earliest Islamic monuments in North Africa and a listed World Heritage Site. The mosque owes it unusual location and appearance to the fact that it was built on the grounds of an earlier fortress. The doors of the mail hall are always open, so you can see its interior from the courtyard. Notice how the carpet in the prayer hall leans against the pillars--providing comfort to people who not only come here to pray but to study as well. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Sousse trip simple and quick.
