#1 of 10 in Things to do in Kairouan
Dating back to 670 CE, The Great Mosque of Kairouan represents one of the oldest and most influential places of worship in the Muslim world. The vast complex boasts fortress-like walls enclosing a prayer hall and a huge marble courtyard. Reused Roman slabs with Latin engravings serve as a testament to the age of this mosque, as does one of the oldest minarets in the world. • Wow. Such a nice mosque. Inside there are a couple of hundred unique columns from different regions of the world. You will receive a change of outfit at the entrance and also the possibility to get a 'local guide' that will explain thing around.
  • Amazing mosque- this mosque is a place of worship which must be respected as such and as a tourist attraction. Visitors are very welcome and viewing of the surroundings is very much encouraged. The staff are very friendly but you must be dressed appropriately- if not there are changing areas where cultural dress is offers to change into before you visit the mosque. Car parking and organised trips are available. There are coffee shops / gift shops and opportunities to take pictures.
  • an interesting ancient mosque / pilgrimage to visit but the place is filthy. This is the third biggest Islamic pilgrimage after Mecca and Medina though Jerusalem would be considered the biggest if you count all the Abrahamic religion. Beware of tourist scammer who pretend to be nice and act like a tourist guide. It is a bummer to be harrassed for money!
  • Lovely place. Visited feb 2019 and came back July 2019. This is how much I love this place. And Tunisia in general.
  • It is such a massive place that it has a feeling that you cant explain it is really good for everyone
