El Jem Amphitheatre, El-Jem

4.8
Marvel at the grandeur of Roman architecture at El Jem Amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins and a World Heritage Site. Built around 238 CE to host crowds of approximately 35,000 for spectator events, the structure remains remarkably intact, standing 148 m (486 ft) by 122 m (400 ft), and displaying a distinctly Roman style in its curved form and use of arches. Though stones have been stripped from it for other construction, battles have raged around it, and it's been used for grain storage, shops, and dwellings over the centuries, the amphitheater still evokes a sense of the prosperity of this area of Roman Africa. • Roman amphitheatre, very well preserved, is spectacular the largest in Africa, the moat is worth not miss the visit, to get the idea of how was the use in his time, although there are many stairs, is fabulous from above, contemplate the beauty of the amphitheater . Worth visiting.

  • Roman amphitheatre classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. 2nd largest in Europe after the one in Rome. Superb place on several levels. Discover the basement with the death row (90% of the Gladiators would die during the games) there are still the pens where we put the fauves for the fights... Very nice view from the top, it's beautiful.

  • Third largest amphitheatre. Not as overrun as the one in Rome. You can move freely and also into the catacombs. It is quite well preserved and part of the seat ranks have already been restored.

  • Probably the best site in Tunisia. An electric ambiance, truly exceptional preservation, locals not as pushy for sales like Tunis. Not much else in the area, so no good restaurants, hotels etc, it's an in and out experience
  • Went to a classical concert here and it was amazing. Surrounded by history. It's awe inspiring.
  • Beautiful arena from ancient Roman times. Enjoyed my visit a lot and best of all, no masses of tourists. There were 8 other people there. We had the entire place to ourselves. What change from Rome!
  • Pretty cool. You are allowed to walk in the tunnels beneath the arena. The theatre is very similar to the one in Rome, just a bit smaller and with less tourists. The ticket for the theatre can also be used to get in to the mosaics museum. There are also toilets within the area.
  • This was amazing experience visiting the largest collisium outside of Italy and the third largest overall. There are minimal limitations of where you can walk to be able to take the full atmosphere in. One word can describe this experience AMAZING.
