Amphitheatre of El Jem, El-Jem

Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Architectural Building
Marvel at the grandeur of Roman architecture at Amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the best-preserved Roman ruins and a World Heritage Site. Built around 238 CE to host crowds of approximately 35,000 for spectator events, the structure remains remarkably intact, standing 148 m (486 ft) by 122 m (400 ft), and displaying a distinctly Roman style in its curved form and use of arches. Though stones have been stripped from it for other construction, battles have raged around it, and it's been used for grain storage, shops, and dwellings over the centuries, the amphitheater still evokes a sense of the prosperity of this area of Roman Africa. • This was an interesting trip. I met a local that took me to the bus station and it cost us $15 to travel to El Jem. The trip from Tunis is probably 1 1/2 hours. The roads are good. The place is...  more »

  • The scale of the amphitheater is mind blowing - at its peak, it’s capacity was only 15,000 spectators less than the grab coliseum in Rome - a testament to wealth and contributions of this region to the Roman Empire. Spectacular to explore the archways, stadium and underground labyrinth of storage pens and tunnel which would have made performances here mind blowing!
  • One of the most spectacular looking places in Tunisia. Survived in a great state however it feels like nothing is done to preserve it for next generations.
  • Beautiful place to explore and walk around. You can spend around half a day here. Amazing views from the top of the coliseum.
  • Worth a visit ! A Amphitheatre similar time Rome but not destroyed. You can visit everything even the underground. Ask for a local guide when you arrive.
  • Very beautiful and all things considered, quite good preserved. A lot to see. Definitely worth seeing.
