Tongariro National Park

Tongariro National Park has a long history of preserving New Zealand's pristine alpine landscape.
Get in touch with nature at Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Silica Rapids Track. Spend the 26th (Sun) exploring nature at Active Outdoor Adventures. There's more to do: admire the sheer force of Taranaki Falls and trek along Whakapapa Nature Walk.

Auckland to Tongariro National Park is an approximately 2.5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or take a bus. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Mon) so you can catch the shuttle to Taupo.

The resort town of Taupo lies on the banks of Lake Taupo, the largest body of water in the whole of Australasia.
On the 28th (Tue), explore and take pictures at Spa Thermal Park and Riverbank Recreational and Scenic Reserve, then admire the sheer force of Huka Falls Walkway, and then push the limits with an extreme tour.

You can take a shuttle from Tongariro National Park to Taupo in 1.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of taxi and bus. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Rotorua.

Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Wed): take in the natural beauty of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, witness a stunning natural landmark at Te Puia, and then kick your exploration up a notch at some of the top local zipline courses and adventure parks. On the 30th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: get impressive views of Waimangu Volcanic Valley, then take a peaceful walk through Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest, and then relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour.

Drive from Taupo to Rotorua in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In December in Rotorua, expect temperatures between 25°C during the day and 17°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Thu) early enough to travel to Tairua.

Tairua

The town of Tairua is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. On the 31st (Fri), hike along Cathedral Cove Walk and then stroll through Hot Water Beach. Here are some ideas for day two: enjoy the sand and surf at Whangamata Beach and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Opoutere Surf Beach.
