The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.

Get some cultural insight at Vilniaus staciatikiu Sventosios Dvasios vienuolynas and Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania. Escape the urban bustle at Kernave Mounds and Balloon Rides. Next up on the itinerary: take an in-depth tour of Holocaust Museum (The Green House), explore the different monuments and memorials at Vingis Park, see the interesting displays at Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Orthodox Cathedral.

Cairo, Egypt to Vilnius is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also drive. Expect cooler temperatures when traveling from Cairo in October; daily highs in Vilnius reach 11°C and lows reach 3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Thu) early enough to drive to Kaunas.

Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.

You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Ninth Fort and Kaunas Town Hall. Head to Laisves aleja (Liberty Boulevard) and kARTufor plenty of shopping. Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Devil's Museum, look for all kinds of wild species at Aleksotas Hill, wander the streets of Old Town, and pause for some serene contemplation at St. Gertrude's Church (Gertrudos baznycia).
