The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple for their historical value. Get some cultural insight at Toji and Nijo Castle. Venture out of the city with trips to Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum (in Osaka), Nishinomiya Shrine (in Nishinomiya) and Dotombori District (in Dotombori). And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle, and take a stroll through Gion.

Traveling by car from Ise to Kyoto takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of train and bus. Expect slightly colder evenings in Kyoto when traveling from Ise in January, with lows around 34°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Sun) early enough to go by car to Hakuba-mura.

Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
On the 11th (Mon), admire the natural beauty at Hakuba Goryu Ski Resort / Alpine Garden, hit the slopes at Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park, then visit Hakuba, then fly down the slopes at Hakuba Happoone Ski Resort, and finally stop by Hakuba Jump Arena.

You can drive from Kyoto to Hakuba-mura in 5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. In January, Hakuba-mura is a bit cooler than Kyoto - with highs of 38°F and lows of 26°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Mon) so you can drive to Tokyo.

On the 12th (Tue), take a stroll through Ginza, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Senso-ji Temple, then browse the exhibits of Tokyo National Museum, and finally wander the streets of Yokohama Minato Mirai 21. On the next day, push the limits with Street Kart Shibuya and then don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine.
