The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Start off your visit on the 9th (Thu): explore the historical opulence of San Felipe de Barajas Castle, don't miss a visit to Plaza de San Diego, and then steep yourself in history at Walled City of Cartagena. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convento La Popa de la Galera, then admire the landmark architecture of Las Bovedas, then contemplate the long history of Plaza Santo Domingo, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver.

Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
When in Bogota, make a side trip to see Catedral de Sal in Zipaquira, approximately 50 minutes away. There's lots more to do: see the interesting displays at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), tour the pleasant surroundings at Parque de Usaquen, get lost in a book at Biblioteca Virgilio, and explore the world behind art at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica.
