A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Kick off your visit on the 16th (Sun): take in the views from Kurima Bridge, kick back and relax at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then snap pictures at Irabu Bridge, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Sunayama Beach.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Start off your visit on the 17th (Mon): stroll through Kondoi Beach, then take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, and then visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki. Keep things going the next day: look for gifts at Yurateiku Market, glide peacefully along the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, and then enjoy the sand and surf at Yonehara Beach.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 19th (Wed), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On the next day, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Chion-in Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and finally steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple.

You can do a combination of flight and train from Ishigaki to Kyoto in 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Expect slightly colder temperatures when traveling from Ishigaki in June; daily highs in Kyoto reach 32°C and lows reach 22°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 20th (Thu) early enough to travel to Tokyo.
