Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Kick off your visit on the 7th (Mon): tour the pleasant surroundings at Colle del Gianicolo and then get outside with Sabbianera Super Beach. Here are some ideas for day two: take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Peter's Basilica, then browse the exhibits of Vatican Museums, and then delve into the distant past at Colosseum.

A lovely town easily accessible from almost anywhere in the country, Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples and sits right on the Amalfi Drive.
