Cairns — 6 nights

The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Relax by the water at Palm Cove Beach and Yorkeys Knob Beach. Do some cultural sightseeing at The Australian Armour & Artillery Museum and Doongal Aboriginal Art Gallery Cairns. Step out of Cairns with an excursion to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures in Wangetti--about 44 minutes away. Spend the 3rd (Wed) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Spend the 5th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's much more to do: stroll through Trinity Beach, take in the architecture and atmosphere at St Monica's Cathedral, trek along Esplanade Boardwalk, and explore the galleries of Bones and Jones.

An area defined by its close relationship with the ocean and its focus on the beach-going lifestyle, Cairns Region has a picture-postcard aesthetic that combines favorably with a relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere. A relative small slither of land--4,135 sq km (1,597 sq mi)--the region nevertheless boasts a large number of attractive beaches, coastal enclaves, scenic towns, and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. The region revolves around the economic prosperity of its immaculate capital, the city of Cairns.
