Though its northeastern section forms part of the industrial West Midlands, Worcestershire still retains much of its peaceful rural feel. The region is known around the world for its sharp-tasting sauce, created in 1837 by two local chemists. Visitors can explore the county’s lush countryside and sleepy market towns. Walkers and nature lovers from around the globe revere the area’s rugged Malvern Hills, which feature numerous hiking trails and the region’s highest peak. The county’s only city is its capital, Worcester, noted for its imposing 12th-century cathedral, which inspired composer Edward Elgar to create some of his finest works.
