A trip to San Jose, the capital, commercial center, and cultural hub of Costa Rica, gives you a chance to experience the lively atmosphere and rich cultural past of this vibrant country.
Head to Galeria Namu and Fabrica de Carretas Eloy Alfarofor plenty of shopping. Get a sense of the local culture at Precolumbian Gold Museum and Museo de Arte Costarricense. You'll find plenty of places to visit near San Jose: La Paz Waterfall Gardens (in Vara Blanca), Toucan Rescue Ranch (in San Isidro) and Poas Volcano (in Poas Volcano National Park). Pamper yourself for a day on the 25th (Sun) at some of the top local wellness centers. There's much more to do: get engrossed in the history at National Museum (Museo Nacional), let the river carry you with a rafting and tubing tour, browse the eclectic array of goods at Central Market (Mercado Central), and meet the residents at Zoo Ave.

Chicago, USA to San Jose is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. Traveling from Chicago in February, expect San Jose to be much warmer, temps between 79°F and 65°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Mon) early enough to travel to Turrialba.

One of Costa Rica's least accessible destinations, Tortuguero sits within an eponymous national park and remains accessible only by plane or boat.

When traveling from Tortuguero in March, plan for somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Tamarindo: temperatures range from 94°F by day to 71°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Mon) early enough to travel to Santa Teresa.
