Whangarei

Whangarei is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. Start off your visit on the 1st (Mon): make a trip to Mount Parihaka War Memorial, then trek along Bream Head Coast Walks, and then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Manaia Track. On your second day here, get engrossed in the history at The Kauri Museum, take in nature's colorful creations at Whangarei Quarry Gardens, and then take in the dramatic scenery at Whangarei Falls.

Wellington to Whangarei is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Tue) so you can go by car to Russell.

Russell

Russell, formerly known as Kororāreka, was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Wed): steep yourself in history at Flagstaff Hill Historic Reserve, contemplate the long history of Pompallier Mission and Printery, and then discover the deep blue sea with Phantom Sailing.

You can drive from Whangarei to Russell in 1.5 hours. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Wed) early enough to drive to Paihia.

Paihia

The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Spend the 5th (Fri) observing fascinating marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour. Next up on the itinerary: admire the natural beauty at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, admire the sheer force of Rainbow Falls, tour the pleasant surroundings at Kororipo Pa Historic Walk, and get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour.
