Wakayama

Split into two parts by the Kinokawa River, the city of Wakayama stands nestled in the eponymous plain, overlooked by a historic hilltop castle that was rebuilt after World War II.
Get out of town with these interesting Wakayama side-trips: Koya-cho (Kongobu-ji Temple, Kobori Nangakudo, &more), Izumisano (Kanku Observation Hall Sky View, Rekishikan Izumisano, &more) and Tokushima (Raifuku-ji Temple, Jinmu Emperor Statue, &more). There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Wakayama Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Nakagoto Shrine, explore the ancient world of Shogun-zuka Ancient Ruin, and head outdoors with Matsue Swimming Beach.

To see photos, where to stay, ratings, and more tourist information, use the Wakayama attractions planning website.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport and Takamatsu Airport. In February in Wakayama, expect temperatures between 48°F during the day and 39°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Thu) to allow time to travel back home.
