Test the local claim that Saint Louis is second only to Washington, D.C. in the number of free activities available by spending your holiday exploring the city's central neighborhoods, famous for their restored century-old red-brick buildings.

Step out of the city life by going to The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House and Castlewood State Park. Step off the beaten path and head to World Bird Sanctuary and Pickle Springs Natural Area. Get out of town with these interesting Saint Louis side-trips: Shaw Nature Reserve (in Gray Summit), Pinckney Bend Distillery (in New Haven) and Mastodon State Historic Site (in Imperial).
