Situated in a basin between two mountain ranges, Taipei appeals to tourists with its blend of Asian cultures, living side by side amidst Japanese-era mansions and Taoist temples.
Kids will enjoy Taipei Zoo and YehLiu Geopark. Explore Taipei's surroundings by going to Leofoo Village Theme Park (in Guanxi), Ruifang (Houtong Coal-Mine Ecological Park & Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street)) and Shifen Old Street (in Pingxi). Spend the 2nd (Thu) exploring nature at Yangmingshan National Park. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, contemplate the long history of The Lin Yutang House, admire the landmark architecture of Taipei 101, and get engrossed in the history at National Palace Museum.

Exeter, UK to Taipei is an approximately 17.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 8 hours traveling from Exeter to Taipei. In May, daily temperatures in Taipei can reach 34°C, while at night they dip to 26°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Fri) so you can catch the train to Xiulin.

Xiulin — 4 nights

Xiulin Township or Sioulin Township is a mountain indigenous township of Hualien County, Taiwan. Take a break from Xiulin with a short trip to Taiwan Beech National Trail in Nan'ao, about 1h 5 min away. There's still lots to do: trek along Taroko Gorge, take in the natural beauty of Wenshan Hot Spring, take in the dramatic natural features at Ch'ing-shui Cliff, and admire the verdant scenery at Mukumugi Valley.

You can take a train from Taipei to Xiulin in 3 hours. Another option is to take a bus. Cap off your sightseeing on the 7th (Tue) early enough to catch the flight to Taitung.

Sitting between the mountains and the sea, Taitung offers pleasing scenery no matter what direction you face.
You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Orchid Island(Lanyu) and Shanhai Tiema Dao. There's lots more to do: grab your bike and head to Guanshan Bicycle Path, take in the natural beauty of Jinlun Hot Spring, head off the coast to Green Island, and make a trip to Taitung Brown's Road.

Hengchun — 6 nights

Located on the southern tip of the eponymous peninsula, Hengchun serves as the entry point to Kenting National Park, often attracting more travelers than locals with its tropical beach resorts and bustling night markets.
Bring the kids along to Kenting National Park and Longpan Park. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Hengchun: Xiao Liu Qiu (in Liuqiu) and Liuqiu Dive (in Pingtung City). Traveling by car from Taitung to Hengchun takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of train and bus. In June in Hengchun, expect temperatures between 38°C during the day and 30°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sun) so you can go by car to Tainan.
