Washington DC — 46 nights

The capital of the United States, the District of Columbia contains the lion's share of the country's most treasured monuments, memorials, and public museums.
Kids will enjoy National Air and Space Museum and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Change things up with these side-trips from Washington DC: Baltimore (National Aquarium, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, &more), Patuxent Branch Trail (in Columbia) and Emmitsburg (National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes & National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton). There's still lots to do: get a new perspective on nature at Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, get a sense of history and politics at Library of Congress, pause for some photo ops at Lincoln Memorial, and learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at National Zoological Park.

For traveler tips, photos, other places to visit, and tourist information, you can read our Washington DC holiday planner.
