A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
On the 18th (Fri), get engrossed in the history at Kanaya Hotel History House, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Nantai, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Takinoo Shrine, and finally take in the pleasant sights at Kirifuri Highlands Kisuge Plain. On the next day, soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, explore the activities along Ryuka Waterfall, and then look for gifts at Nikko Okaki Factory.

Tokyo to Nikko is an approximately 2-hour car ride. You can also take a train. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Sun) to allow time to drive to Tokyo.

Getting from Nikko to Tokyo by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a train. In May, plan for daily highs up to 28°C, and evening lows to 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sun) early enough to take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 11th (Mon), take in the spiritual surroundings of Ninna-ji Temple, brush up on your knowledge of spirits at Yamazaki Distillery, and then don't miss a visit to Gion. On the 12th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: contemplate the waterfront views at Kamogawa River, take a stroll through Pontocho, then stop by Teramachi Street, and finally browse the different shops at Kyoto Station Building.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to do a combination of flight and train; or drive. In June in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 32°C during the day and 22°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Tue) so you can take a train to Nagoya.

On the 13th (Wed), examine the collection at Toyota Automobile Museum, then visit a coastal fixture at Cape Irago, and then go for a stroll along the water at Koijigahama. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 14th (Thu): buy something for everyone on your list at Aeon Mall Tokoname, buy something for everyone on your list at JR Central Towers, and then identify plant and animal life at Yamazaki River.

Traveling by train from Kyoto to Nagoya takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Kyoto in June, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Nagoya: temperatures range from 28°C by day to 23°C at night.
