Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Catedral del Espiritu Santo and Food Tours. There's much more to do: get impressive views of Santiaguito Volcano, look for gifts at Chocolate Dona Pancha, examine the collection at Lxkik Maya Museum, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora).
