Custer

Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town.
Attractions like Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Iron Mountain Road make great kid-friendly stops. Venture out of the city with trips to Windcross Conservancy (in Buffalo Gap) and Presidential Trail (in Keystone). There's much more to do: admire the majestic nature at Custer State Park, explore the activities along Sylvan Lake, take in the dramatic natural features at Needles Eye Tunnel, and trot along with a tour on horseback.

Badlands National Park

Although Badlands National Park's name might not be the most inviting, its landscape of pinnacles, eroded buttes, spires, and an expansive, pristine mixed-grass prairie remain enticing.
Bring the kids along to Loop Road and Yellow Mounds Overlook. Step out of Badlands National Park to go to Interior and see Hurley Butte Horseback Riding, which is approximately 40 minutes away.
