Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Get outdoors at Santa Maria Volcano and Fuentes Georginas. Go for a jaunt from Quetzaltenango to Retalhuleu to see Xocomil about 1h 20 min away. Spend the 17th (Tue) exploring nature at Cerro El Baul. There's lots more to do: explore the activities along Laguna Chicabal, make a trip to Central Plaza, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora).
