Budapest — 22 nights

Pearl of the Danube

You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Budapest: Eger (Gardonyi Geza Emlekmuzeum, Eger Castle, &more). And it doesn't end there: ponder the world of politics at Hungarian Parliament Building, see the interesting displays at House of Terror Museum, appreciate the history behind Shoes on the Danube Bank, and steep yourself in history at Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

To find photos, more things to do, maps, and other tourist information, use the Budapest trip planning site.

Accra, Ghana to Budapest is an approximately 13-hour flight. The time zone difference moving from Greenwich Mean Time to Central European Standard Time is 1 hour. Plan for cooler temperatures traveling from Accra in October, with highs in Budapest at 19°C and lows at 7°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Fri) early enough to drive to Debrecen.

Debrecen — 8 nights

Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary after Budapest. Explore Debrecen's surroundings by going to Tokaj (Rakoczi Pince es Udvarhaz, Erzsebet Winery - Tokaj, &more), Disznókő (in Mezozombor) and Nyiregyhaza (Korzo Shopping Centre, Zoo Sosto, &more). Spend the 6th (Sun) exploring nature at Hortobagy National Park. There's much more to do: identify plant and animal life at Tokaj Wine Region, learn about winemaking at Arvay Family Winery, walk around Hanging Gardens of Lillafured, and pause for some serene contemplation at Szentharomsag Church.
