Traveling from Hong Kong in May, plan for slightly colder nights in Taipei, with lows around 26°C. You'll have a few hours on the 6th (Sun) to wrap things up before traveling to New Taipei.

Xinbei, also known as New Taipei City, stands as a newly founded part of the wider Taipei metropolitan area, stretching up from the capital to the island's northern coast.
On the 6th (Sun), take in the dramatic scenery at Shifen Waterfall, examine the collection at Pinglin Tea Museum of New Taipei City, explore the activities along Shihding Ciandao Lake, then take in the dramatic scenery at Wufengchi Waterfall, and finally witness a stunning natural landmark at Tangweigou Jiaosi Hot Spring Park.

Hualien

Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Hualien boasts a number of attractions, both natural and manmade.
Your day by day itinerary now includes Yanzihkou Trail (Swallow Grotto) as well as Zhuilu Old Trail. On the 8th (Tue), pause for some photo ops at Eternal Spring Shrine and then trek along Taroko Gorge. Getting from Toucheng to Hualien by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of bus and train. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 10th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Nantou.

Nantou

Nantou provides good access to the cultural and natural sites of the surrounding county of the same name.

You can do a combination of train and bus from Hualien to Nantou in 5.5 hours. Another option is to drive. Expect a daytime high around 36°C in June, and nighttime lows around 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to drive to Chiayi.

Chiayi

The provincial city in the county of the same name, Chiayi sits as the gateway to the national scenic mountain area of Alishan.
On the 12th (Sat), get engrossed in the history at Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, then witness a stunning natural landmark at Fire and Water Spring, and then take in the natural beauty of Guanziling Hot Spring.
