Founded in 1701 by a French explorer and adventurer, Detroit exerted a profound impact on the world for most of the 20th century.Get out of town with these interesting Detroit side-trips: Toledo Zoo (in Toledo) and Boat Tours & Water Sports (in Frankenmuth). There's still lots to do: explore the world behind art at Detroit Institute of Arts, contemplate the long history of Motown Museum, examine the collection at The Henry Ford, and take a leisurely stroll along Detroit RiverFront.
