A town of hot springs and wine, Paso Robles (or "Pass of the Oaks") feels like a desert paradise to those who travel here.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Mission San Antonio de Padua and Veris Cellars. We've included these beaches for you: Moonstone Beach and Piedras Blancas. Explore Paso Robles' surroundings by going to Elephant Seal Rookery (in San Simeon), Morro Bay (Morro Rock & Morro Bay National Estuary) and Monarch Butterfly Grove (in Pismo Beach). You can do a combination of bus and train from Death Valley National Park to Paso Robles in 11.5 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or do a combination of bus and train. In January in Paso Robles, expect temperatures between 19°C during the day and 1°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 18th (Thu) so you can go by car to Carmel.

Step off the beaten path and head to Carmel City Beach/Carmel River Beach and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Visit Point Lobos State Reserve and Asilomar State Beach for some beach relaxation. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Carmel: Big Sur (McWay Falls, Partington Cove, & more). There's still lots to do: admire all the interesting features of Seventeen Mile Drive, stop by The Cheese Shop, explore the activities along Monterey Bay, and do a tasting at Pierce Ranch Vineyards.

You can drive from Paso Robles to Carmel in 2.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of train and bus; or take a bus. Traveling from Paso Robles in January, expect a bit warmer with lows of 7°C in Carmel. On the 22nd (Mon), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can drive to Mendocino.

Traveling from Carmel in January, plan for little chillier nights in Mendocino, with lows around 2°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 27th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Healdsburg.
