Surfing remains the main reason to take a trip to Tamarindo, as the beachside town is mostly known for its excellent waves.
Bring the kids along to Tamarindo Beach and Playa Hermosa. You'll get in some beach time at Playa Conchal and Samara Beach. When in Tamarindo, make a side trip to see Samara Farmers Market in Playa Samara, approximately 1h 55 min away. Next up on the itinerary: kick back and relax at Playa Avellana, stop by Lydia Beech Art, soothe aching muscles at some of the top local wellness centers, and identify plant and animal life at Monkey Park.

A trip to San Jose, the capital, commercial center, and cultural hub of Costa Rica, gives you a chance to experience the lively atmosphere and rich cultural past of this vibrant country.
Get in touch with nature at La Paz Waterfall Gardens and River Rafting & Tubing. Galeria Namu and National Museum (Museo Nacional) will appeal to museum buffs. Venture out of the city with trips to Poas Volcano (in Poas Volcano National Park) and Our Lady of the Angels Basilica (Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles) (in Cartago). There's still lots to do: admire the masterpieces at Precolumbian Gold Museum, take in the architecture and design of Universidad de Costa Rica, get engrossed in the history at Jade Museum, and step off the mainland to explore Cocos Island National Park.

You can fly from Tamarindo to San Jose in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and flight; or drive. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from Tamarindo in June: high temperatures in San Jose hover around 31°C and lows are around 23°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sun) early enough to travel to Manuel Antonio.
