For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Attractions like Playa Caracas and Playa Pata Prieta make great kid-friendly stops. Explore hidden gems such as Balneario Sun Bay and Mosquito Pier. There's lots more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Playa La Chiva, take a pleasant ride with a tour on horseback, enjoy the sand and surf at Playa Navio, and take a leisurely stroll along Malecon.
