City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Visiting Nijino Matsubara and Nokonoshima Island will get you outdoors. Your inner history buff will appreciate Yutoku Inari Shrine and Old Moji Zeikan. Get out of town with these interesting Fukuoka side-trips: Karatsu (Cherry Trees in Kagamiyama & Mt. Kagamiyama Inari Shrine), The House of Kamio's Family (in Nakatsu) and Kyushu National Museum (in Dazaifu). And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Tochoji Temple, get to know the fascinating history of Jokamachi Chofu, visit Karato market, and contemplate the long history of Mizuki Ruins.

Not too far from the capital, Ito has developed a reputation as a resort town, with a fair portion of its area lying within a national park.
Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine and Hachimangukinomiya Shrine will appeal to history buffs. Escape the urban bustle at Yumigahama Beach and Mount Omuro. Explore Ito's surroundings by going to Tateyama (Kembutsu Beach, Tateyama Municipal Museum, &more), Minamiboso (Takabe Shrine & Shirahama Marine Museum) and Hakone-machi (Honma Yosegi Art Museum, Onshi Hakone Park, &more). Next up on the itinerary: explore the striking landscape at Jogasaki Coast, get to know the resident critters at Nihondaira Zoo, take in the spiritual surroundings of Omuro Sengen Shrine (Shimosengen), and contemplate the long history of Yamada Nagamasa Residence Place.

Traveling by flight from Fukuoka to Ito takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Traveling from Fukuoka in August, expect nights in Ito to be about the same, around 79°F, while days are slightly colder, around 84°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Sat) to allow time to take a train to Tokyo.
