Philosopher Cicero once described Syracuse as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all." A powerful city-state of ancient Greece, Syracuse now is the capital of the eponymous Italian province on the eastern coast of Sicily.
Get some historical perspective at Duomo di Siracusa and Ragusa Ibla. Museo Archeologico Regionale P. Orsi and Monastero dei Benedettini are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Syracuse: Noto (Centro Storico di Noto & Spiaggia Calamosche), Il Paniere di Sicilia s.r.l. (in Ragusa) and Piazza Duomo (in Catania). There's lots more to do: head off the coast to Ortigia, steep yourself in history at Greek Theater, Head underground at Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dionisio), and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Chiesa di San Giovanni alle Catacombe.
