Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
You'll get in some beach time at Yumigahama Beach and Miho Seacoast (Miho no Matsubara Beach). Take a break from the city and head to Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi (Ashinoko). Go for a jaunt from Hakone-machi to Atami to see Atami Sun Beach about 44 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum and take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Kick off your visit on the 23rd (Fri): get engrossed in the history at Gassho Zukuri Minka-en, don't miss a visit to The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Traditional Houses in the Gassho Style, then see the interesting displays at Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall, and finally make a trip to Sakurayama Hachiman-gū Shrine. Here are some ideas for day two: wander the streets of Sanmachi Suji, then get a sense of history and politics at Takayama Jinya, and then see the interesting displays at Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato).

Traveling by car from Hakone-machi to Takayama takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Hakone-machi in March, expect Takayama to be little chillier, temps between 11°C and 2°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 24th (Sat) to allow time to drive to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Gion and Kiyomizu-dera. Visit Nijo-jo Castle and Ryoanji Temple for their historical value.
