Get a sense of the local culture at Nara Park and Osaka Castle. Kids will enjoy Universal Studios Japan and Spa World. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Osaka: Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center & Tōdai-ji). There's still lots to do: don't miss a visit to Dotonbori, wander the streets of Minami (Namba), and admire nature's wide array of creatures at Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan.

Melbourne, Australia to Osaka is an approximately 15-hour combination of flight and train. Start off your visit on the 15th (Thu): deepen your understanding at Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, see the interesting displays at Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum, then wander the streets of Chinatown (Nankinmachi), and finally take a stroll through Kobe Harborland.

Kick off your visit on the 16th (Fri): see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, make a trip to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, then appreciate the history behind Atomic Bomb Dome, and finally step into the grandiose world of Hiroshima Castle. On the 17th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: get to know the fascinating history of Miyajima and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Itsukushima Shrine.

You can take a train from Kobe to Hiroshima in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus, flight, and ferry. In March in Hiroshima, expect temperatures between 16°C during the day and 6°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sun) so you can take a train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Gion and Fushimi Inari Taisha are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Nijo-jo Castle and Sanjusangendo Temple will appeal to history buffs. There's much more to do: take some stellar pictures from Kiyomizu-dera, take in the spiritual surroundings of Ryoanji Temple, get engrossed in the history at Kyoto National Museum, and steep yourself in history at Heian Shrine.
