The narrow city of Ketchikan clings to the bluffs that form Revillagigedo Island's southwestern shore.

Las Vegas to Ketchikan is an approximately 8-hour combination of flight and ferry. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus and ferry. The time zone changes from Pacific Standard Time to Alaska Standard Time, which is usually a -1 hour difference. Traveling from Las Vegas in July, things will get cooler in Ketchikan: highs are around 65°F and lows about 54°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Fri) so you can travel to Juneau.

Juneau is an unusual state capital in many respects.
Get in touch with nature at Dolphin & Whale Watching and Eagle Beach. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Steep Creek. Home to nearly half of Alaska's population, the port city of Anchorage covers a staggering area of over 4,900 sq km (1,900 sq mi) surrounded by mountains.
Step off the beaten path and head to Alyeska Ski Area and Alaska Botanical Garden. Visiting Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Friends of Eagle River Nature will get you outdoors. Change things up with these side-trips from Anchorage: Palmer (Reindeer Farm & Bodenburg Butte). There's still lots to do: stroll through Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, take a memorable drive along Seward Hwy, see the interesting displays at Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, and trek along Virgin Creek Falls Trail.

You can fly from Skagway to Anchorage in 5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. August in Anchorage sees daily highs of 66°F and lows of 53°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sat) early enough to drive to Homer.
