Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Step off the beaten path and head to Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines and Memorial Sign Strelka Of Vasilievskiy Island. Called the "Summer Capital of Russia," the busy resort town of Sochi is best known as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Krasnaya Polyana Mountain Cluster and Marine Passenger Terminal. And it doesn't end there: fly down the slopes at Gornaya Karusel Sport-Tourist Complex, make a trip to Svyato-Troitsky Temple, see where the action happens at "Laura" Cross-country Ski & Biathlon Center, and take in the dramatic natural features at Akhshtyrskaya Cave.

Fly from St. Petersburg to Sochi in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Plan for much hotter temperatures traveling from St. Petersburg in January, with highs in Sochi at 11°C and lows at 3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Sat) to allow time to fly to Moscow.
