A Soviet-like grid of opulent marble edifices in the center of the desert, Ashgabat paints an unusual picture.
Head to Russian Bazaar and Tolkuchka-Basarfor some retail therapy. Appreciate the collections at Turkmen Carpet Museum and Ashgabat National Museum of History. There's still lots to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Kow Ata Underground Lake, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Russian Orthodox Church, take in the spiritual surroundings of Geokdepe, and appreciate the history behind Independence Monument.

Start off your visit on the 9th (Tue): get engrossed in the history at National History and Ethnology Museum and then explore the ancient world of Gyaur Kala. Here are some ideas for day two: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Pokrovskaya Church and then delve into the distant past at Gonur Depe.

Konye-Urgench, also known as Kunya-Urgench, Old Urgench or Urganj, is a municipality of about 30,000 inhabitants in north Turkmenistan, just south from its border with Uzbekistan. Start off your visit on the 11th (Thu): make a trip to Seyit Ahmet, explore the ancient world of Il Arslan Mausoleum, make a trip to Kutlug Timur Minaret, contemplate the long history of Turabek Khanum Mausoleum, then contemplate the long history of Kunya-Urgench, and finally steep yourself in history at Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: delve into the distant past at Gate of the Caravanserai, steep yourself in history at Kyrk Molla, then make a trip to Konye Urgenc, and finally don't miss a visit to Konye Urgenc Museum.

You can do a combination of flight and taxi from Mary to Kunya-Urgench in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of train and taxi. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Mary in June: highs in Kunya-Urgench hover around 40°C, while lows dip to 23°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Fri) early enough to travel to Balkanabat.
