Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica of St. Anthony and Scrovegni Chapel. Doge's Palace and Peggy Guggenheim Collection will appeal to museum buffs. Step out of Venice with an excursion to Chiesa degli Eremitani in Padua--about 54 minutes away.
