Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica of St. Anthony and San Giorgio Maggiore. Doge's Palace and Peggy Guggenheim Collection will appeal to museum buffs. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Venice: Padua (Scrovegni Chapel & Chiesa degli Eremitani). There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, visit Cannaregio, take in the views from Ponte di Rialto, and pause for some serene contemplation at Scuola Grande di San Rocco.
