Head deep beneath the surface of the earth at Waitomo Caves, a village and cave system that draws both extreme sports enthusiasts and those wanting something a little more relaxed.
Kick off your visit on the 16th (Mon): tour the pleasant surroundings at Ruakuri Walk, Head underground at Ruakuri Cave, and then take a memorable tour with Spellbound Glowworm & Cave Tours. On your second day here, explore and take pictures at Mangapohue Natural Bridge Walk, then admire the sheer force of Marakopa Falls, then explore the fascinating underground world of Caveworld, and finally step off the mainland to explore Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.

Auckland to Waitomo Caves is an approximately 3-hour car ride. You can also take a bus; or do a combination of train and bus. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Tue) so you can drive to Rotorua.

Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Mt Maunganui Main Beach. Eat Street and Government Gardens are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Rotorua, make a side trip to see Mount Maunganui Base Track in Mount Maunganui, approximately Mount Maunganui away.
