The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Walking tours and Sanzen-in Temple. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki), don't miss a visit to Mt. Kurama, and wander the streets of Pontocho.

Kyoto is just a short distance from Osaka. In September, plan for daily highs up to 33°C, and evening lows to 23°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Takayama.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
You've now added Nakasendo Walking Trail, Tsumagojuku to your itinerary. Kick off your visit on the 18th (Wed): hike along Nakasendo Walking Trail, Tsumagojuku. On the 19th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: take in the dramatic scenery at Osakacho Waterfalls, contemplate the long history of Takayama Jinya, wander the streets of Sanmachi Suji, learn more about the world around you at Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato), then examine the collection at Hikaru Museum, and finally enjoy breathtaking views from Ogimachi Castle Old Site Observatory.

Traveling from Kyoto in September, expect nights in Takayama to be about the same, around 22°C, while days are a bit cooler, around 30°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Fri) so you can go by car to Hakone-machi.
