Reykjavik — 6 nights

Reykjavik, the world's most northerly capital, effortlessly combines small-town charm with heaps of big city energy.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Hraunfossar and Grotta Lighthouse. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Hallgrimskirkja and Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition. Change things up with these side-trips from Reykjavik: Reykjadalur Hot Springs (in Olfuss), Grindavik (Blue Lagoon & Gunnuhver Hot Springs) and Barnafoss (in Reykholt). There's still lots to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Reykjavik Open Air Museum, get a dose of the wild on Dogsledding Iceland, examine the collection at The Settlement Center, and admire the sheer force of Faxi (Vatnsleysufoss) Waterfall.

Cartagena, Colombia to Reykjavik is an approximately 14.5-hour flight. The time zone changes from Colombia Standard Time (COT) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is usually a 5 hour difference. Prepare for cooler weather when traveling from Cartagena in October: high temperatures in Reykjavik hover around 9°C and lows are around 3°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Wed) so you can drive to Vik.

Vik — 2 nights

Iceland's southernmost village, Vik, sports some of the country's wildest and most dramatic coastline.
Kick off your visit on the 13th (Thu): trek along Fimmvorduhals Hiking Trail, get engrossed in the history at Skogar Museum, take in the dramatic scenery at Skogafoss, then explore the striking landscape at Sólheimajökulll, and finally take in the dramatic natural features at Mýrdalsjökull. Keep things going the next day: kick back and relax at Black Sand Beach, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Reyniskirkja Church, then take in the dramatic natural features at Reynisdrangar, and finally contemplate the geological forces at Icelandic Lava Show.

You can drive from Reykjavik to Vik in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In October, daytime highs in Vik are 8°C, while nighttime lows are 5°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Fri) early enough to go by car to Akureyri.

Akureyri — 3 nights

Capital of North Iceland

Often referred to as Iceland's second city, Akureyri offers an array of cultural attractions in a scenic setting.
Get a sense of the local culture at The Herring Era Museum and Palshus. Appreciate the collections at The Old Farmhouse Laufas and Folk Music Center. Change things up with a short trip to Grjotagja Cave in Reykjahlid (about 1h 10 min away). There's lots more to do: get some thrills on the water with a speed boat tour, take in the dramatic natural features at Dimmuborgir Lava Formations, take in the dramatic scenery at Hverfjall, and admire the natural beauty at Akureyri Botanical Garden.

Getting from Vik to Akureyri by car takes about 7.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of bus and flight; or take a bus. Expect slightly colder evenings in Akureyri when traveling from Vik in October, with lows around 0°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 17th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Grundarfjorour.

Get outdoors at Snaefellsjokull National Park & Glacier and Laki Tours Whale Watching - Olafsvik. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Budakirkja and Dritvik and Djupalonssandur. Venture out of the city with trips to Snaefellsjokull National Park (in Hellissandur) and Snaefellsbaer (Vatnshellir Cave & Rauofeldsgja).
